Prayer Shawl Ministry
"You created every part
of me, knitting me in my Mother’s womb. For such handiwork,
I praise You. Awesome this great wonder!” Psalm 139:13-14
"Compassion and the love of knitting/crocheting
have been combined into a prayerful ministry and spiritual practice
which reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace, as well
as in celebration and joy. Many blessings are prayed into every
shawl. The shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the
recipient. The intentions are continued throughout the creation
of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before
the shawl is sent on its way."
- Janet Bristow and Victoria Galo
who began this ministry in 1998.
Many parishes have begun this ministry which touches
the hearts of those in need of our prayers. Whether it is offering
the yarn, knitting in a prayer group or knitting in your own home,
this is a ministry that invites all to participate. The shawls/blankets
are given to men and women in our parishes or far from home. They
help us celebrate life, ease our sorrow, or comfort us in times of
danger.
Prayer Shawl Ministry Stories
Those who have received these shawls tell of the
powerful presence they feel when their faith community has wrapped
them in their prayers. Many parishes reach out to those they will
never meet by donating to places such as Hospice, Pregnancy Help or
to those serving in the Armed Forces. If your Prayer Shawl Ministry
has information or stories to share, we would love to post this on
our website.
Prayer Shawl Retreats
Would your parish be interested in hosting a retreat
for parishes or faith communities in your area ? The retreat might
be a way of beginning new groups or gathering those already in this
ministry. Please let us know and we will be happy to assist you.
